Background

The ProBE Program is the original educational intervention in ethics for health care practitioners who are under discipline by their licensing boards or other oversight agencies. Originally designed for physicians, the range of professional ethics it addresses is applicable to all health care professionals. Participants have included -- in additon to physicians -- practitioners from dentistry, advanced practice nursing, podiatry, chiropractic, acupuncture and physicians assistants.
First developed in 1992 for the State of New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners, The ProBE Program has been subscribed to and/or approved for continuing medical education in professional ethics by 44 state licensing boards in the United States (click here to view participating states) as well as several specialty boards. We gratefully acknowledge the trust and confidence of so many licensing boards and their assistance in the development, implementation and evaluation of this intervention. (Current Brochure - pdf version.)
In August, 2007, CPEP, the Center for Personalized Education for Physicians, the Denver-based, national leader in physician assessment and education programs, acquired the ProBE Program from The Ethics Group, LLC. This joining of the ProBE Program and CPEP strengthens and expands their mutual capacity to provide support and solutions to physicians and other health care practitioners.

The ProBE Program is registered in the Health Provider Assessment and Remediation Resource Manual published by the US Health Resources and Service Administration, Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC: 2003) pp 30 & 42; and, in the Directory of physician assessment and remedial education programs, published by The Federation of State Medical Boards, p. 11. CPEP is also affiliated with the Coalition for Physician Enhancement, an organization of universities and other agencies devoted to promoting excellence in patient care through personalized assessment and education of individual physicians.
ProBE has been presented to the Institute of Ethics of the American Medical Association (AMA), to the joint AMA and Canadian Medical Association, International Conference on Physician Health and at the annual national conferences of major professional societies such as the American College of Physicians; the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics; the American Public Health Association; the Administrators in Medicine of the Federation of State Medical Boards; the Society of Medical Jurisprudence; Federation of Chiropractic Boards; and the American College of Legal Medicine (2002 S. Sandy Sanbar Lecture).
An early description of The ProBE Program is found in The Federation BULLETIN: The Journal of Medical Licensure and Discipline, (1996) 3:83 143-148, (published by The Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc.) See also, "Practicing Accountability in Professional Ethics," Journal of Clinical Ethics (Winter 2002) 13:4:359-366 [PDF version] and "Avoiding Fallacies of Misplaced Concreteness in Medical Professionalism," American Journal of Bioethics (Spring 2004) 4:2 31-33, for more recent articles about the ProBE Program.

Under CPEP auspicies, ProBE will continue to be directed by the founding director, Joseph d'Oronzio. The original faculty members of The ProBE Program who developed and offered this intervention since 1992, will continue as the core faculty, assisted by additional highly qualified medical educators whose work in ethics is clinically based and firmly grounded in the social and legal context of the health professions. They bring to this team-taught intervention personal insights from diverse perspectives and a range of expertise from the areas of medicine, philosophy, psychiatry, clinical ethics, health law, public health, health policy and management, and social and ethical theory.
